Using a net, a hunter captures many birds. A wise quail shows the birds how, by cooperating, they can lift up the net and escape. Birds distracted by petty quarrels are easily trapped, but those able to set aside their differences live safely in peace.
A little white rabbit, startled by a loud noise and shaking, springs into flight in fear of an earthquake. His panic spreads to the other forest animals, endangering all who rush after him blindly. When they reach a dangerous cliff, a lion saves them from disaster and teaches them how to cope more wisely with fear.
Senaka, king of Benares, protects a snake under attack. The snake offers the king a secret spell that allows him to understand the speech of animals. This gift, however, comes with a price: if Senaka ever reveals the spell, he will die.
A woodpecker risks his life to save a lion in distress. When it is time for the lion to repay the woodpecker his kindness, he proudly rebuffs the bird. Yet the woodpecker refrains from anger and revenge, saying that kindness is its own reward.
A Monkey King whose tribe is attacked by humans risks his life to save his troop. When he is fatally harmed by one of his own subjects, the good monkey leader dies of a broken heart. A human king who observes this display of selflessness, vows to always remember the teachings of the noble Monkey King.
